Although BMW now offers multiple crossover SAVs, the X5, which arrived in the 2000 model year, was their first entry into this segment. It was the first model BMW built at their Spartanburg, South Carolina assembly plant and came standard with traction control and a self-leveling suspension. This crossover took the car platform of the BMW 5 Series sedan and added some of the all-wheel drive control systems from Land Rover vehicles. It first ran on a 4.4-liter V8 with 324 pound-feet and 282 horsepower, although a 3.0-liter inline-6 was added in 2001 for more efficiency. 2002 saw a third engine arrive, a 340-horsepower 4.6-liter V8.
The 2004 BMW X5 got refreshed styling and sportier lines, and also replaced the 4.6-liter V8 with a 4.8-liter V8. The 2007 X5 was completely reengineered to improve the user experience with interior controls. This was also the first year that seating was available for seven passengers.
A diesel engine became an option for 2009 and in 2010, and newly available features included Active Steering, a heads-up display, and 4-zone climate control. For 2011, BMW gave the X5 a new base engine in the form of a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 with 300 horsepower. The year of 2014 saw enhanced styling and engineering, and also introduced the 8-speed automatic as a standard feature.
